Activity and the audit trail

What was done, when, and what the value was before it changed. One entry per deliberate act.

The before value is the point of it: the question "what was it before" is asked precisely when somebody wants to put it back.

The third is where what did this ask for last month is actually asked, because it is the only place the answer was ever different.

What it covers​

Exactly what was done by hand:

  • Opening a case, and correcting a manual one
  • Ordering a document, classifying one, removing one
  • Reading a document with a schema, and correcting what it read
  • Correcting a field, and resolving a disagreement
  • Screening subjects, and running an adverse media check
  • Starting an ownership walk, expanding a branch, raising a budget
  • Editing a configuration or an extraction schema
  • Issuing a report

What it does not cover​

Anything a poller, a scheduled tick or a driver does on its own. Those are not deliberate acts, and their progress is already the subject of the screens they move.

The panel says so on screen, because a trail that silently omits things is worse than one that states its scope.

Before and after are the values, not descriptions of them​

A configuration's whole field set. An extraction schema in full. An ownership structure diffed holder by holder, so an edit reads

Acme Holding S.p.A. (60%, of the company) → Acme Holding S.p.A. (55%, of the company)

rather than "the ownership was edited".

The trail outlives what it describes​

Removing a case takes its documents, runs and reports with it, and does not take the record of what was done to them. Each entry keeps its own copy of the entity's name, so it still reads after the thing it describes is gone.
