Document types
A document type is the key that joins a document to the schema that reads it. It is not a label.
Two vocabularies, one list
From the registers: the categories the registers themselves use. These exist whether or not you have written a schema for them, because a document delivered by a register arrives already classified.
| Type | |
|---|---|
| Trade register extract | Certified trade register extract |
| Trade register history | Certificate of good standing |
| Beneficial owners certificate | Articles of association |
| Financial statements | Annual returns |
| Official publications | Other documents |
Added here: the types you created yourself, for the documents that are not any of those. A power of attorney, an org chart, a group structure memo, a board resolution.

Adding one
A type is created where it is needed: on the extraction schema form. Choosing add a type there names it, and the schema you are writing is what makes it readable.

A type without a schema behind it can label a document but cannot have one read, which is why the two are created together.
Document types are part of the vocabulary, like configurations and extraction schemas: write a type once and every case files that document the same way.
Why an upload can only take a type with a schema
Because the alternative is filing a document under a name nothing will ever read, and then wondering on the Fields tab why a value never arrived. A document already on the case keeps whatever type it has, including a type whose schema has since been deleted, because the label still tells you what the document is.
